3.6.3. Enabling and disabling program trace collection

Use the Collect Program Trace checkbox to enable or disable program trace collection at runtime. If the box is selected, the ARM Profiler produces an .apb directory at runtime in addition to the usual .apa file. The .apb directory contains .part log files that contain information on all of the instructions called during execution. Enabling program trace adds the program trace view to the code view and a number of options specific to navigating the additional data. For more information on program trace, see The program trace view.

Note

  • Enabling program trace has an impact on target execution speed. It does not have a significant impact on the host data collection speed if the sampling rate is set to cycle accurate. Program trace slows down a host data collection with a higher sampling rate.

  • When program trace is turned off the size of the analysis file is not significantly affected by the length of execution. This is not the case when program trace is enabled because, in addition to recording which instructions are executed, the .apb file logs the order in which the instructions were executed and the time each instruction took to complete.
