Can I use something other than CLKOUT to clock the RAM blocks?

Applies to: AXI L220 L2CC

Answer

You should always use CLKOUT. The L2CC has a CLKOUT so that it can be gated when the RAM block is not used by the L2CC, and the gating of CLKOUT takes the programmed RAM latencies into consideration. If you use another clock signal, you have no way of knowing whether the RAM is or should be busy and therefore you would need to leave the clock running all the time.

ARM Technical Support has a document which discusses all of the different options for implemented RAM blocks on the L210 and L220, such as difference in clock speed, latencies, etc. Please contact them to obtain a copy.
