What are the types of encryption keys programmed into the Logic Tile?

Applies to: LT-XC2V (Virtex-II), LT-XC4V (Virtex-4), LT-XC5V (Virtex-5)

Answer

The Logic Tiles are programmed with an encryption key to enable the use of Soft Macrocell Models.

The Soft Macrocel Model (also referred as SMM) are encrypted images that will work only if the Logic Tile is programmed with a suitable encryption key. An SMM image is produced to work with the type of Logic Tile and encryption key used on that Logic Tile, as described below:

For Virtex 2 Logic Tiles:
----------------------
The Virtex 2 devices have provision to store up to two encryption keys. By default, two encryption keys are programmed into the Virtex 2 Logic Tiles after production. They are,

- A Specific Key. This is unique to each Logic Tile and is generated based on the serial number of the Logic Tile.
- A Global Key. A common key for all Virtex 2 Logic Tiles and is unique to Virtex 2 family of Logic Tiles.

If there is a requirement to use Virtex 2 Logic Tile for SMM, we normally produce the encrypted image of SMM based on the Specific Key of the Logic Tile. The resulting SMM image will work only with that particular Logic Tile.

For Virtex 4 and Virtex 5 Logic Tiles:
-----------------------------------
The Virtex 4 and Virtex 5 devices have provision to store one encryption key. By default, no key is programmed into the Virtex 4 and Virtex 5 Logic Tiles.

If there is a requirement to use the Virtex 4 or Virtex 5 Logic Tile for SMM, we normally produce the encrypted image of SMM based on the Global Key. The resulting image will work with a Logic Tile programmed with the Global Key. Hence on requirement the Virtex 4 and Virtex 5 Logic Tiles are programmed with a Global Key which is unique to the Virtex family of Logic Tiles. i.e. the Global Key for Virtex 4 is different than Virtex 5 or Virtex 2 Logic Tile and vice versa.

If you are purchasing the development boards for use with SMM, you must order for 'Logic Tile (s) with encryption Key' as the key is not programmed into all the Logic Tiles by default. Also, if there is a requirement to use a existing Logic Tile with SMM that doesn't already have the encryption Key programmed, we recall the Logic Tile to ARM UK and program it with an appropriate encryption key to use with the SMM.

If you have a Logic Tile that needs an encryption key to be programmed, please fill the "Development Board Fault Report Form" to send the board to ARM UK for programming the key.
