Can you help me to understand the performance enhancement provided by the addition of the 32-bit AXI peripheral port in the ARM11 processors, as compared to the ARM9?

Applies to: ARM1176

Answer

ARM11 processors provides a flexibility for you to choose the most
optimal arrangement for your system - placing peripherals on the private
peripheral port means the maximum bandwidth is lower because that interface is a
lower performance (32-bit) interface, but on the other hand, that traffic no
longer has to contend with other traffic on the main data interface
port.

You can decide to connect each peripheral either on the private
peripheral bus, or on the main system bus.

You can make your own judgement or simulate some test cases to evaluate
the relative merit of different arrangements.
