SYMPTOM

Attempting to connect to an MCB1000 board with ULINK2 or ULINK-ME returns the following message:

SWD communication failure

in Options for Target — Debug — Settings.

CAUSE

This can happen when you mistakenly program the security bits on the LPC11xx device.

RESOLUTION

Download FlashMagic from Embedded Systems Academy, and under ISP — Erase flash make sure to check Erase all Flash+Code Rd Prot checkbox.

Then click the Erase button to erase the device. Once the security bits are reset, ULINK2 will connect normally.
