Why can I not see my RVI over USB?

Applies to: RealView ICE and Trace (RVI / RVT)

Answer

There are a number of possible reasons why your RealView ICE unit may not be visible over a USB connection.

  • The RVI unit has not completed its boot sequence.
  • The RVI unit is not connected to the host computer by a USB cable.
  • You are using RVI firmware older than version 1.2.
  • Your RVI firmware version is lower than version 225.
  • The USB drivers have not been installed on your PC.

If the RVI USB drivers have not been installed, you should be prompted to install them by a Windows driver wizard when you connect the RVI unit.  The drivers are located in the RVIUSBDrivers directory on the RVI CD-ROM.

Another cause of a missing RVI USB device is incorrect network settings on the RVI unit.  If DHCP is not selected and the TCP/IP settings are not all valid, then USB will not work even though you are not connecting to the unit by ethernet.  To fix this, you should enable DHCP as follows:

  1. Connect to the RVI unit via ethernet.
  2. Start the RealView ICE Config IP application.
  3. Start the scan for RVI units.
  4. Select the RVI unit you wish to configure.
  5. Click on the RVI Configure tool.
  6. Ensure there is a tick in the DHCP box, click the Configure button, then wait for the RVI unit to reboot.  Once this has completed, you should be able to connect via USB.

The RealView ICE Config IP utility is described in section 3.2 of the RealView ICE 1.2 User Guide, available on the RVI 1.2 CD-ROM.
