Why does syntax highlighting not work for assembler files?

Applies to: RealView Development Suite (RVDS)

Answer

Neither the ARM Eclipse plugins shipped with RVDS 3.1, nor the ones for RVDS 3.0, provide assembler syntax highlighting.

The first web-update to the Eclipse plugins shipped with RVDS 3.1 includes the first release of the ARM Assembler Editor plugin, which enables syntax highlighting when editing assembler files. However, files that are opened for editing at the time the Assembler Editor plugin is installed will stay associated with the default text editor.

This can be resolved by manually opening these files with the ARM Assembler Editor.

To do this:

  • Close the source file
  • Right-click on the source file in the C/C++ Projects pane to display the context menu
  • Select Open with -> ARM Assembler Editor from the context menu

After this has been done once, the updated settings will be saved into the file's properties, so that the next time it is opened, syntax highlighting will be enabled by default.
