Why do I get a 'Failed to Load the Kernel' error when connecting to my target?

Applies to: RealView Development Suite (RVDS)

Answer

RealView Debugger v3.1 (RVD) needs write permissions to the following location on both a Windows and Linux install:

<RVDS Install>/DSDB/libraries/carv/1.1/80

If the current user does not have write permissions for this directory, RVD will report the following error message when attempting to connect to a target:

Error V004B (Vehicle): Failed to Load the Kernel

This issue will most likely be encountered on a multi-user Linux environment where users only have read access to a central RVD installation.

The solution is to provide all RVD users with write permissions to the directory mentioned above.
