How does the sample rate parameter affect profiling on hardware?

Answer

The sample rate parameter determines how many instructions are covered by each cycle payload delivered to the ARM profiler.

The processing of cycle accurate trace is performed in the RVT2 unit before the result is sent to the ARM Profiler. 

A small number for sample rate will provide more accurate timing information when analysing individual instructions (e.g. if you set the sample rate to one, a cycle payload will be returned for each individual instruction traced). The higher the sample rate the bigger the group of instructions for which a cycle payload is reported, while decreasing instruction level cycle accuracy.

Higher sample rates will reduce the USB bandwidth between the RVT2 unit and the host PC.
