Why is AXI spec suitable for "high bandwidth" designs ?

Applies to: AXI

Scenario

What is the meaning of the AXI Specification statement that

"The objectives of the latest generation AMBA interface are to be suitable for high-bandwidth and
low-latency designs."?

Answer

AXI was designed for moving a lot of data round, quickly. 'High bandwidth' peripherals are those
that do just that - eg memory controllers, DMA controllers etc.

High Bandwidth is a subjective term but generally it refers to the sort of peripherals
mentioned and the moving around of sizeable quantities of data.
