Unrecognized option '--elf' when attempting to build Linux applications with RVCT 3.1 evaluation version

Applies to: RealView Development Suite (RVDS)

Scenario

Attempting to build Linux applications (for example, with AN178) using the RVCT 3.1 evaluation version fails with the error message:

Fatal error: Q3900U: Unrecognized option '--elf'

Answer

The evaluation version of RVDS 3.1 is restricted to produce/handle proprietary (ORC) format objects - ELF is not supported.

Unfortunately, this makes it impossible to use the evaluation version to build Linux applications.

Workaround

If evaluating building Linux applications, a temporary license of the full version of RVDS 3.1 will be required.

This is not a problem with RVDS 4.0, which does not place this object format restriction on the evaluation version.
