How do I use search scopes?

This page tells you how to create search scopes that specify the areas that you want to search. Search scopes are useful if searching in the Current document or Current set of documents does not meet your needs, especially if you want you want to search multiple areas of the site at once. See:

Opening the Search scope dialog

To use search scopes, click the Search scope link beside the Get search results button Get search results icon. A dialog appears.

You can use this dialog to create and edit search scopes, to choose a search scope to use, and to remove search scopes when you have finished using them.

Search scopes are stored on your computer in cookies, and persist between sessions.

Creating a search scope

To create a search scope:

  1. Click the New button in the Search scope dialog. A new dialog opens

  2. In this dialog, type a name for the search scope in the List name field.

  3. Check any topics that you want to include in the search scope. If necessary, use the Plus icon beside a topic to expand it:

  4. When you have selected all the topics you require, click OK.

    The search scope is selected for you in the Search scope dialog.

  5. Click OK to close the Search scope dialog, and set this as your current search scope.

    This also sets the search bar to search in the Current search scope that you have just created.

To search the new scope, enter your search term in the Search for field, and ensure you are searching in the Current search scope. Then either click the Get search results button Get search results icon or press Return.

Choosing a search scope

To choose an existing search scope to search:

  1. Open the Search scope dialog.

  2. Select the search scope you want to use.

  3. Click OK to close the Search scope dialog.

    This also sets the search bar to search in the Current search scope that you have just selected.

To search the selected scope, enter your search term in the Search for field, and ensure you are searching in the Current search scope. Then either click the Get search results button Get search results icon or press Return.

Editing a search scope

To edit a search scope:

  1. Open the Search scope dialog.

  2. Select the search scope you want to edit.

  3. Click Edit. A new dialog opens.

  4. In this dialog

    • check any topics that you want to add to the search scope
    • uncheck any topics that you want to remove from the search scope.

    If necessary, use the Plus icon beside a topic to expand it.

  5. When you have selected all the topics you require, click OK.

    The search scope is selected for you in the Search scope dialog.

  6. Click OK to close the Search scope dialog, and set this as your current search scope.

    This also sets the search bar to search in the Current search scope that you have just edited.

To search the edited scope, enter your search term in the Search for field, and ensure you are searching in the Current search scope. Then either click the Get search results button Get search results icon or press Return.

Removing a search scope

To remove a search scope:

  1. Open the Search scope dialog.

  2. Select the search scope you want to remove.

  3. Click Remove.

  4. Click OK to close the Search scope dialog.

    This also resets the search bar to search in All documents.
